Changing Diapers {The Hip Mom’s Guide To Modern Cloth Diapering} A Review & GIVEAWAY

Way way back in the days when I was but a teen the thought of using cloth diapers never occurred to me. I am guessing it was because I had no idea about the ease of use of Modern Cloth Diapers. I had a picture of cloth diapering in my head that contained images of rubber pants, scary pins, and folding techniques that required a degree in Origami.. Flash forward to week 12 of my pregnancy. While watching Youtube mommies I discoved that many of them used cloth diapers and seemed to love it. I decided I would do some research and see what all the fuss was about with these modern cloth diapers. I spent literally hours that night looking up all the different types of diapers and visiting what seemed like hundreds of different websites gathering information, needless to say I was hooked on the idea of cloth diapering from that night on and now at 8 months old One Little Indian’s behind has been adorned in cute fluff ever since.

The thing I quickly realized while doing my initial “look” into cloth diapers was that at the time there was no great “One Stop Shop” for information on using cloth diapering. For a new mommy considering cloth it can be so confusing. What’s a Hybrid? How in the world do you prep these things for use? What if I have stink issues with my diapers? Cloth diapering CAN be a huge initial investment, one you want to protect and make the most out of. I speak from personal experience when I say that cloth diapering is a lifestyle and can be quite an obsession (much to The Chiefs dismay).

Changing Diapers {The Hip Mom’s Guide to Modern Cloth Diapering} written by cloth diaper advocate and guru Kelly Wels is a book I have been so excited to get my hands on as soon as I heard that it was in the works. After 8 months of cloth diapering One Little Indian I think that I have the basics down but never the less there are some things I am still confused about.  Changing Diapers provides an incredibly informative guide to using cloth in this day and age and would have made my early journey into the world of fluff so much easier.  Changing Diapers really is a “One Stop Shop” for cloth diaper information for new moms who haven’t yet touched a cloth diaper to old pros looking to combat issues with their diapers or as I have found learn new information about cloth diapering.

I really enjoyed reading the statistics on cloth diapering. I will admit we cloth diaper more out of “sport” and environmental concerns then real necessity but I learned in Changing Diapers {The Hip Mom’s Guide To Modern Cloth Diapering} that using cloth diapers saves parents an average of $2,000 per child from birth to potty training and that amount grows even more if you use your cloth diaper stash on more then one child. If the savings alone aren’t enough to at least make a parent take a second look at cloth diapering how about the environmental impact?  Every year 28 BILLION disposable diapers end up in landfills and if that doesn’t seem staggering enough consider that experts estimate that disposable diapers could take up to 500 years to degrade. I loved sharing the information I gained from Changing Diapers as a Veteran Cloth Diaper Mom with my friends and family.

I LOVE having the charts for Packing The Cloth Diaper Bag (I have a print out of this stuffed in our diaper bag for The Chief) and My Fluffy Stash (a sheet where you can record what you have in your stash). This section is perfect for recording your Cloth Diaper adventures too!  The back of Changing Diapers also contains room to write in your Cloth Diaper related stories and a blank space to write in any other information you may need. Building Your Babies Library: One Little Indian Approved Books.

For our baby shower for One Little Indian I had read about a great idea to request books instead of greeting cards and have the giver write a personalized message in the book. Cards are thoughtful but can’t really be “enjoyed” as a book can. That left us with a great start to One Little Indian’s library.  I’ve made it a nightly ritual to read after bath time and then a bottle and bed. We read other times during the day too, usually sitting on One Little Indian’s bedroom floor. I’m overjoyed to report that at 7 months he is finally starting to “get into” books. I wanted to share with my readers a few books that One Little Indian just LOVES at 7 Months. Perhaps you are looking for a few books to add to your babies library, these are great choices.

 

1.) Rainbow Duck by Yvette Lodge

I’ve found that any book that has too much text on one page is a no go. Rainbow Duck is just the perfect amount of text. Very colorful pictures grace the pages of this board book along with a soft fuzzy duck cover and touch a feel on each page. One Little Indian always goes for this book first and it’s not a boring book to read either (which is great because we read it almost nightly).

2.) Peek-a-boo! Happy Baby by Mark Richards

Another one of our favorite books. Happy Baby is a board book that includes Peek-a-boo lift flaps. This is such a fun book, I really enjoy the creative rhyming and so does One Little Indian. He gets so excited right before the Peek-A-Boo and flap lift. He always wants to play with this book by himself once we are done too. There are other books in the Peek-a-Boo! series, we also have the Peek-a-Boo! Love You book and it is equally cute.

3.) Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do you See? By Bill Martin Jr. / Eric Carle

This book is a classic but oddly enough before receiving this as a gift at our baby shower I had never read it. I can see why it is so popular. The illustrations are just adorable and it’s such an easy read for a baby. One Little Indian will not sit still for long books so this is a great book because it is a fast read. He really enjoys looking at the different colors too! I think Santa is bring more Eric Carle books but until then this is our favorite.

4.) Fifteen Animals! by Sandra Boynton

My aunt picked out this book especially for One Little Indian for our shower. If you’ve ever read this book you know that it centers around the name “Bob” and I just happen to have an Uncle Bob (who is my aunts husband). We thought this was hilarious. And even though I think this was bought as more of a joke it’s really a great book! Really easy read and funny to boot. And babies love repetition so this is always a hit. We haven’t taken advantage of the downloadable song yet, perhaps sometime in the near future.

 

5.) Baby Einstein: Mirror Me! by Julie Aigner-Clark

Babies love mirrors, this is just a fact of life. One Little Indian would sit for a good half a hour in front of a mirror if given the chance and check out the “other baby”. Not only does this book feature a mirror on each page but the splashes of color on each page are eye popping and appealing to babies. Mirror Me! Is so bright and cheery it makes One Little Indian smile every time we read it. On the back cover of the book they offer suggestions for parents on ways to interact  more with the book and ways to have fun with the mirrors. We’ve tried a few of these and although I don’t think One Little Indian can truly appreciate what I’m trying to teach him perhaps someday.

 

Reading is so important for children, not only to teach words but also to build a bond with parents. I encourage any parent looking for books to start out with early reading for their babies to check these books out. I would recommend these books for 6+ Months.

Each pouch is made with interfacing for stability which means that if you sit it up it won’t just slouch over, I have makeup bags made with this and it’s very conveniant when you are working on a project (or doing you makeup as it may be). This Jacobean Print Coptic Bound Journal is a perfect example of how Upcycling can breathe new life into useful products and remain beautiful at the same time. This journal holds 60 sheets of paper and is fashioned out of upcycled cardboard and then covered with heavy decorative paper. I simply adore this print, it’s so elegant and fun. Of course you can find many other print options for Coptic Bound Journals at Cinderlisa Designs but this one here, this is my favorite. Even though this isn’t Back to School themed I just HAD to share this with you. It is painfully pretty, you know what I mean, one of those things you just look at and YEARN for. At my own wedding I had my mother make my bridal bouquet out of fake flowers so I could keep it forever, it’s used as decoration in my bedroom now and I am so glad I used an option that wouldn’t just be thrown away. I had no idea that you could even do this with paper, at least so beautifully with paper! You can have this made to match your bridal colors by sending a swatch of your colors to Cinderlisa Designs and she will match your colors with the use of hand cut, hand crafted cardstock and decorative paper, paired with perhaps some yarn and pompoms to round out your bouquet . There is noting at all I would change about the bouquet in the picture, this was the bouquet the owner of Cinderlisa Designs used at her own wedding, jealous much? I am.

Something you should know about me before we continue our blogger/reader relationship is that I LOVE PIRATES. When I’m shopping for anything for One Little Indian I always snag up anything that even has a remote theme of anything piraty. I’m pretty convinced I was a pirate in another life.
