Changing Diapers {The Hip Mom’s Guide To Modern Cloth Diapering} A Review & GIVEAWAY

Way way back in the days when I was but a teen the thought of using cloth diapers never occurred to me. I am guessing it was because I had no idea about the ease of use of Modern Cloth Diapers. I had a picture of cloth diapering in my head that contained images of rubber pants, scary pins, and folding techniques that required a degree in Origami.. Flash forward to week 12 of my pregnancy. While watching Youtube mommies I discoved that many of them used cloth diapers and seemed to love it. I decided I would do some research and see what all the fuss was about with these modern cloth diapers. I spent literally hours that night looking up all the different types of diapers and visiting what seemed like hundreds of different websites gathering information, needless to say I was hooked on the idea of cloth diapering from that night on and now at 8 months old One Little Indian’s behind has been adorned in cute fluff ever since.

image
The thing I quickly realized while doing my initial “look” into cloth diapers was that at the time there was no great “One Stop Shop” for information on using cloth diapering. For a new mommy considering cloth it can be so confusing. What’s a Hybrid? How in the world do you prep these things for use? What if I have stink issues with my diapers? Cloth diapering CAN be a huge initial investment, one you want to protect and make the most out of. I speak from personal experience when I say that cloth diapering is a lifestyle and can be quite an obsession (much to The Chiefs dismay).

Changing Diapers {The Hip Mom’s Guide to Modern Cloth Diapering} written by cloth diaper advocate and guru Kelly Wels is a book I have been so excited to get my hands on as soon as I heard that it was in the works. After 8 months of cloth diapering One Little Indian I think that I have the basics down but never the less there are some things I am still confused about.  Changing Diapers provides an incredibly informative guide to using cloth in this day and age and would have made my early journey into the world of fluff so much easier.  Changing Diapers really is a “One Stop Shop” for cloth diaper information for new moms who haven’t yet touched a cloth diaper to old pros looking to combat issues with their diapers or as I have found learn new information about cloth diapering.

image
I really enjoyed reading the statistics on cloth diapering. I will admit we cloth diaper more out of “sport” and environmental concerns then real necessity but I learned in Changing Diapers {The Hip Mom’s Guide To Modern Cloth Diapering} that using cloth diapers saves parents an average of $2,000 per child from birth to potty training and that amount grows even more if you use your cloth diaper stash on more then one child. If the savings alone aren’t enough to at least make a parent take a second look at cloth diapering how about the environmental impact?  Every year 28 BILLION disposable diapers end up in landfills and if that doesn’t seem staggering enough consider that experts estimate that disposable diapers could take up to 500 years to degrade. I loved sharing the information I gained from Changing Diapers as a Veteran Cloth Diaper Mom with my friends and family.
If you are considering cloth diapering you will find literally a treasure trove of information to help you along in Changing Diapers {The Hip Mom’s Guide To Modern Cloth Diapers} including:
  • Basic Information about each Type of Cloth Diapers available
  • Information on different fabric options for Modern Cloth Diapers
  • A look into Accessories for Cloth Diapering
  • Information on different Brands of Cloth Diapers
  • A section for Cloth Diapers vs. Daycare
  • A look at Traveling with Cloth Diapers
  • A section regarding Cloth Diapering Multiples
  • A look into overcoming common problems while using cloth diapers
  • Daddies and Cloth Diapers
  • How To Guide for Washing Cloth Diapers
  • And Much Much MORE…
My favorite section of Changing Diapers {The Hip Mom’s Guide to Modern Cloth Diapering} was the neat little Extras section at the back of the book. I LOVE having the charts for Packing The Cloth Diaper Bag (I have a print out of this stuffed in our diaper bag for The Chief) and My Fluffy Stash (a sheet where you can record what you have in your stash). If you are a Veteran Cloth Diaper user you know that Fluffy Moms LOVE to share. This section is perfect for recording your Cloth Diaper adventures too!  The back of Changing Diapers also contains room to write in your Cloth Diaper related stories and a blank space to write in any other information you may need. If you are giving Changing Diapers as a gift this would be a great place to share perhaps your Laundry Routine with a new cloth diaper mama.

Changing Diapers {The Hip Mom’s Guide to Modern Cloth Diapering} doesn’t hit stores until September but several bloggers had a chance to review the guide early (Thanks Kelly Wels!). One Little Indian was one of the lucky blogs chosen to review Changing Diapers and that’s not all…Drumroll please…Host a giveaway in honor of Changing Diapers release. How nice is Kelly? Woohoo!

Building Your Babies Library: One Little Indian Approved Books.

For our baby shower for One Little Indian I had read about a great idea to request books instead of greeting cards and have the giver write a personalized message in the book. Cards are thoughtful but can’t really be “enjoyed” as a book can. That left us with a great start to One Little Indian’s library.  I’ve made it a nightly ritual to read after bath time and then a bottle and bed. We read other times during the day too, usually sitting on One Little Indian’s bedroom floor. I’m overjoyed to report that at 7 months he is finally starting to “get into” books. I wanted to share with my readers a few books that One Little Indian just LOVES at 7 Months. Perhaps you are looking for a few books to add to your babies library, these are great choices.

1.) Rainbow Duck by Yvette Lodge

image

I’ve found that any book that has too much text on one page is a no go. Rainbow Duck is just the perfect amount of text. Very colorful pictures grace the pages of this board book along with a soft fuzzy duck cover and touch a feel on each page. One Little Indian always goes for this book first and it’s not a boring book to read either (which is great because we read it almost nightly).

2.) Peek-a-boo! Happy Baby by Mark Richards

image

Another one of our favorite books. Happy Baby is a board book that includes Peek-a-boo lift flaps. This is such a fun book, I really enjoy the creative rhyming and so does One Little Indian. He gets so excited right before the Peek-A-Boo and flap lift. He always wants to play with this book by himself once we are done too. There are other books in the Peek-a-Boo! series, we also have the Peek-a-Boo! Love You book and it is equally cute.

3.) Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do you See? By Bill Martin Jr. / Eric Carle

image

This book is a classic but oddly enough before receiving this as a gift at our baby shower I had never read it. I can see why it is so popular. The illustrations are just adorable and it’s such an easy read for a baby. One Little Indian will not sit still for long books so this is a great book because it is a fast read. He really enjoys looking at the different colors too! I think Santa is bring more Eric Carle books but until then this is our favorite.

4.) Fifteen Animals! by Sandra Boynton

image

My aunt picked out this book especially for One Little Indian for our shower. If you’ve ever read this book you know that it centers around the name “Bob” and I just happen to have an Uncle Bob (who is my aunts husband). We thought this was hilarious. And even though I think this was bought as more of a joke it’s really a great book! Really easy read and funny to boot. And babies love repetition so this is always a hit. We haven’t taken advantage of the downloadable song yet, perhaps sometime in the near future.

5.) Baby Einstein: Mirror Me! by Julie Aigner-Clark

image

Babies love mirrors, this is just a fact of life. One Little Indian would sit for a good half a hour in front of a mirror if given the chance and check out the “other baby”. Not only does this book feature a mirror on each page but the splashes of color on each page are eye popping and appealing to babies. Mirror Me! Is so bright and cheery it makes One Little Indian smile every time we read it. On the back cover of the book they offer suggestions for parents on ways to interact  more with the book and ways to have fun with the mirrors. We’ve tried a few of these and although I don’t think One Little Indian can truly appreciate what I’m trying to teach him perhaps someday.

Reading is so important for children, not only to teach words but also to build a bond with parents. I encourage any parent looking for books to start out with early reading for their babies to check these books out. I would recommend these books for 6+ Months.

Sponsor Spotlight: Cranberry Lover

image

And last but certainly not least for our Sponsor Spotlights I would like to introduce you to Cranberry Lover on Etsy.  Something I have learned from cloth diapering is to appreciate prints and even more so to appreciate cute prints. I am almost always in search of prints that are unique and fun for our diapers so I practically swooned over all the wonderful prints Cranberry Lover has to offer and in several useful products you are sure to find something you just can’t live without.

image
Although I am not fortunate enough to own an IPad YET, note the yet, someday soon I hope to have The Chief buy one for me, I can still oogle over IPad Accessories. Like this wonderful Bicycle IPad Sleeve. I’ve never seen this particular print before and that is what drew my gaze while browsing. Each IPad Sleeve is fully lined in cotton and is padded with batting for extra protection, add a cute button elastic closure and what is not to love about this? Of course this isn’t the only print you will find for your IPad Sleeve options, and some of the prints even offer a Velcro closure instead of the button/elastic combo. The sleeves are made specifically for an IPad but they will also accommodate a 10 inch laptop should you have one.

imageAnother lovely print from Cranberry Lover is this Little Cute Hippo, I am digging this Pencil Pouch. Perfect for Back to School. Made from cotton and canvas this Japanese fabric is so original. Each pouch is made with interfacing for stability which means that if you sit it up it won’t just slouch over, I have makeup bags made with this and it’s very conveniant when you are working on a project (or doing you makeup as it may be). Of course you will find several other incredibly adorable prints for Pencil Pouches another one of my favorites is this Bonjour Pencil Pouch, now this would be perfect for using as a makeup bag too!  Do you have a Smart Phone? Want an neat option for a cell phone pouch? Check out this Little Elephant Mobile Pouch? I LOVE it!

Want to Win it? Cranberry Lover has offered up three, yep you read that THREE of their Little Cute Hippo Pencil Pouches ($10 value each) in One Little Indian’s Back to School Blog Hop Package.

Sponsor Spotlight: Heavenly Creatures Art

image

Something I find very fascinating about Etsy is the ability to purchase not only Handmade items but also items from all over the world. Our next sponsor Heavenly Creatures Art hails from Spain! Who wouldn’t want to own a piece of art from Spain? And better yet, art from Spain at an amazing price? Right now Heavenly Creatures Art is having a Back to School sale with School Bags, Pencil Cases, and Notebook 50% off! I love a bargain and I think you will appreciate it too.

image
Perhaps you have a little boy who loves Sharks? I remember going to school with a boy that was obsessed with them, I imagine now as an adult he is jumping for joy when Animal Planet has Shark Week on TV. Heavenly Creature’s Kid’s Shark Backpack is very unique, your shark enthusiast is sure to be over the moon when you present him (or her) with this 100% leather backpack.  Adjustable padded shoulder straps make this backpack very comfy to wear along with being stylish.  Heavenly Creatures Art also offers a matching Pencil Case with a waterproof inner. What a great find! And of course right now during their sale a steal at 50% off! You can find many other Original Animal Watercolor print Back to School Items including my favorite this Under the Stars with Papi Elephant print Backpack. Aww, I swooned too cute!

Sponsor Spotlight: Elysia’s Boutique

image

I have a confession to make. I am already starting to purchase things for our next baby and One Little Indian is only 7 1/2 months old. Not only that but I am starting to purchase girl things, yep crazy right? I am convinced that someday, even if it is not baby #2 but someday we will be blessed with a girl. I can’t wait to dress her up, do her hair, and just generally fill her closet with frilly clothes. I practically drool when I see cute girly things. If you do too you should check out Elysia’s Boutique, you will find tons of cutesiest girl (and boy) baby items amongst other things such as items for adults, the home, and of course Back to School shopping and get this, all items can be Monogrammed! I love personalization.

image
When I stumbled upon this Monogrammed Polka Dot Frame Ruffle Butt Bloomer and Hair Bow Set it made me so happy! Such bright fun colors. We are a cloth diapering family so I expect that whatever covers my babies rear will look cute. Obviously One Little Indian’s cloth diaper stash doesn’t consist of any frills so when we do eventually have a little girl I will definitely need to stock up. You can purchase just the Bloomers or the set of the Bloomer and Hair Bow at Elysia’s Boutqiue in many darling vibrant designs and colors. Bloomers are made to fit sizes 0 months all the way up to size 6 for Toddlers. The Hair Bows also feature fun options such as added monogram for a small fee and you can choose what type of clip you would like for your bows including single and double pronged alligator clips or small, medium, or large French Barrettes. This mama loves options. You can even choose the font of your Bloomer Monogram from tons of different choices.

image
Do you have a teen or pre-teen in your house? Why not spoil them rotten this Back to School season with their very own Large Monogrammed Quilted Zebra Print Messenger/Gym Bag? Teens will love having something so special bag to store Gym Clothes, and I think these would be absolutly perfect for the teen that plays School Sports, just stuff all the necessities for the after school practice or game into this bag and keep them separate from their school bag. Want a great deal? If you would like to really WOW your teen you can purchase matching accessories including Water Bottles, Lunch Totes, and more! Not enough? You can choose either a Monogram or a full name to be printed on the outside of the bag with many many fonts available and a ton of different color options for the personalization to boot! Your teen will be making a fashion statement, perhaps starting a trend amongst her peers, and you will be the cool mom, ah yes, the cool mom.

Sponsor Spotlight: ItsyBitsyPaper

image

You have probably noticed by now that I really do love personalized items. I would also always rather give something that you can’t just go to the store and buy, even if it means I have to pay a bit more for it. It really excited me when I can find personalized handmade items that cost LESS then store bought alternatives. At ItsyBitsyPaper you will find gorgeous colorful paper products for adults and children at incredibly affordable prices. And if that doesn’t convince you then the turn around time should, most of the time you will get proofs within 24 hours and your products shipped withing 3-4 business day, procrastinator approved.

image
I would like to think that the art of Thank You cards is making a come back. Growing up I was never made to fill out Thank You cards for Birthday or Christmas presents but it is definitly something I’ve picked up on as an adult and I hope to pass on to One Little Indian. I remember how expensive it was to buy store bought cards for our wedding and baby shower and they were no where near the quality of these Brush Stroke Thank You Cards from ItsyBitsyPaper. You will find so many great designs for Thank You cards at ItsyBitsyPaper from Couple’s Thank You Cards to Baby Shower Thank You cards. What is great with buying handmade Thank You cards is that the colors can usually be adjusted to suit your preference and at ItstyBitsyPaper you can even pay a small fee extra and have a matching return address printed on the backflap of the envelopes. Saves you time and money on matching labels.

image
Here is something you may have never knew that you needed but I bet you would love how handy they are! This set of Blast Off Boys Personalized Money and Note School Envelopes are guaranteed to make you the cool mom on the block. If you have a child that is very young you know just how forgetful they can be and you also know that they tend to lose things, it’s a fact of life unfortunately. With Back to School envelopes you can tuck their lunch money, notes to teacher or bus driver, and permission slips inside and send them on their way. A much better option then sticking said items in a backpack pocket or even a plain white envelope that they are more likely to forget about or to have get lost in all the other plain white paper they carry every day. And should your child happen to misplace the envelope his name, teachers name, room, and grade are printed right on the outside. Peace of mind for parents and a pretty great idea for teachers too, imagine how much your child’s teacher would appreciate having exactly what is inside labeled on the front of these envelopes? They come in a set of 20, enough to get you through a school year indeed. Great idea ItsyBitsyPaper.

Want to Win It? ItsyBitsyPaper if offering one lucky winner their very own set of Personalized Money and Note School Envelopes (a $13 Value) in One Little Indian’s Back to School Blog Hop Package.

Sponsor Spotlight: Cinderlisa Designs

image

Here at One Little Indian I hope to be able to showcase for you Eco-Friendly options for everyday living. When I came across Cinderlisa Designs on Etsy I discovered that they would be a “great” fit for both One Little Indian’s passion and our Back to School Blog Hop. CinderLisa Designs offers many options for Back to School products that are both unique and Eco-Friendly, utilizing many Upcycled products in their designs making them truly unique and ever so appealing.

image
This Jacobean Print Coptic Bound Journal is a perfect example of how Upcycling can breathe new life into useful products and remain beautiful at the same time. This journal holds 60 sheets of paper and is fashioned out of upcycled cardboard and then covered with heavy decorative paper. I simply adore this print, it’s so elegant and fun. Of course you can find many other print options for Coptic Bound Journals at Cinderlisa Designs but this one here, this is my favorite. Some of the options for Coptic Bound Journals at Cinderlisa Designs even use upcycled covering for the front/back of the journal. Check out this Corn Pops Mini Cereal Coptic Journal, perhaps I should think twice before sending off my cereal boxes to the Recycling Center. Neat!

image
Even though this isn’t Back to School themed I just HAD to share this with you. It is painfully pretty, you know what I mean, one of those things you just look at and YEARN for. This Customizable Keepsake Paper Bridal Bouquet is stunning to say the least. At my own wedding I had my mother make my bridal bouquet out of fake flowers so I could keep it forever, it’s used as decoration in my bedroom now and I am so glad I used an option that wouldn’t just be thrown away. I had no idea that you could even do this with paper, at least so beautifully with paper! You can have this made to match your bridal colors by sending a swatch of your colors to Cinderlisa Designs and she will match your colors with the use of hand cut, hand crafted cardstock and decorative paper, paired with perhaps some yarn and pompoms to round out your bouquet . There is noting at all I would change about the bouquet in the picture, this was the bouquet the owner of Cinderlisa Designs used at her own wedding, jealous much? I am.

Want to Win It? CinderLisa Designs is offering one lucky winner a $25 Gift Certificate to their shop in One Little Indian’s Back to School Blog Hop Package.

After window shopping at O.C. Styles I can certainly understand how they became such a popular Etsy seller for wedding items. Just look at this Bridal Pack of 5 Purses with Black and White Dandy Damask, complete with Teal Satin Bow and Crystal. These speak to me, how perfectly dainty and sophisticated are these? I have a deep love for damask and I adore the pairing of black, white, and teal. Within the next month my family is set to attend two weddings, wouldn’t it be neat if I caught a glimpse of the bridesmaids walking down the aisle carrying one of these? This particular set of Bridal Purses are just one of many combinations that O.C. You really just have to check out the fabric options offered, I had a hard time picking my favorite. Finally I settled on this Peonies in Paradise Print, it’s unique and I am always after unique. Sponsor Spotlight: Party Prints 4U

image

Something you should know about me before we continue our blogger/reader relationship is that I LOVE PIRATES. When I’m shopping for anything for One Little Indian I always snag up anything that even has a remote theme of anything piraty. I’m pretty convinced I was a pirate in another life. When I happened upon Party Prints 4U that was one of the first things I noticed, they have an awesome Pirate selection of Personalized products. Yarrr!

image
I am pretty much in love with this Cute Pirate Invitation. I have a Pirate Themed 1st Birthday Party in the works for One Little Indian (naturally) but since it is his 1st Birthday I don’t want to do anything too dark and scary, this is perfect and exactly what I had in mind. The Invitations are Digital Designs which means Party Prints 4U will design the invitation for you and you will print them out wherever you wish. This saves money on shipping costs and allows you to choose a printer within your budget. I really like this idea, I do all my own prints already with One Little Indian’s pictures so naturally I would do this with his birthday invitations as well.  If you prefer the whole kit and caboodle Party Prints 4U also offers the same great Digital Files of Invitations in fully printed cardstock versions in packages ranging from 10 to 50 Invitations a no hassle option for the busy moms out there.

Party Prints 4U designs the neatest Back to School Name Tag Stickers, perfect for labeling your child’s things! You can stick these to your children’s books, notebooks, pencil cases, lunch bags, crayons, pencils, markets, heads (ok maybe not but I would do this at least once just for laughs), pretty much anything you want to assure that other children don’t get mixed up with their belongings. There are many designs you can choose from both boy and girl so why not let your little one pick out their favorite? Each sticker is 2 inches round and come in sets of 20. I am thinking perhaps I need some of these for snacks my husband keeps pilfering from me. There is no way he could say he didn’t “know I wanted them” that way. Pretty good idea if you ask me.

Want to Win It? Party Prints 4U is offering one lucky winner TWO sets  of Personalized Back to School Stickers ($$13 Value) in One Little Indian’s Back to School Blog Hop.
