Day 2 of our WAHM Direct Sales Week, yippee! Today is dedicated to a company I am quite familiar with (to say the least). I am a HUGE fan of Scentsy and their products. I’ve been using Scentsy for years which goes along with my personal obsession with tarts. You will not find a better warmer then what Scentsy has to offer. I am pleased to introduce you to my personal consultant, friend, and amazing Scentsy Consultant!
Hello! And thank you for joining us for One Little Indian's WAHM Direct Sales Week, Please introduce yourself to our readers:
My name is ChrisAnn Simek, and I'm a Scentsy Star Consultant and Scentsy addict! I'm a stay-at-home-mom to a wonderful 3 year old boy, and a military wife.
How did you first hear about the company you now represent and what made you want to join?
A family member gave a warmer and some scent bars for my birthday. The first time I warmed my Scentsy wax, I was hooked! I couldn't believe how much fragrance was packed into the small bits of wax. And I'd been really torn about getting rid of my candles, because my son was just crawling around. I did not want there to ever be an issue where he got hurt because of one of my candles. Scentsy's SAFE! No wick means no flame, which means no putting my love of scented wax aside for my child's safety. Then I found out that I could save lots of money by joining the company, which worked well for me because of the military life. I'm able to use Scentsy as a doorway to meeting all sorts of new people.
How easy was getting your "foot in the door" with your company, Were there any costs associated with joining and what did you get for these costs?
It does cost $99* U.S. to join Scentsy (*before tax and shipping). However, that's for the kit that helps you sell your Scentsy. It includes a Full Size Warmer ($30), a Scentsy Buddy w/scent pak ($25), a Room Spray ($8), a Scentsy bar ($5), Fragrance Foam ($6), Scent Circle ($3), a full party tester kit ($75), and tons of startup business supplies (catalogs, order forms, etc.). That alone is much more than you're actually paying for. Scentsy also can be sold in Canada, Germany, United Kingdom, and Ireland. However, price of the kit may vary slightly per country.
We all know that having a Down line is important in any Direct Sales Business, How did you go about getting your down line to join you? How many people do you currently sponsor for your company?
Currently, I have a team of 11 and one recruit joining at the end of the month. One is a family member that saw my success and decided she wanted a piece too. One is a fellow military wife that came to one of my parties and fell in love with the product. One is a complete stranger that I have never met before; she found me on my Facebook group and was on board after finding out all Scentsy has to offer. One was my best customer! I asked her one day if she'd ever given it any thought. Less than 24 hours later, she signed up without even telling me. Each and every member of my down line were different stories, but they all are important members of my team.
Do you do home parties? If so tell me a little about how a typical party might run? How much work goes into a party? How many home parties do you do a month?
Sure, I do parties. It's one of my favorite parts of the job! Scentsy is all about Simplicity. That's why you don't get all the bells and whistles with your Startup kit: It's really honestly not necessary to do a party. I show up 15-20 minutes before party time to set up. I warm a few cubes of wax in my display warmer, set out my party testers, and put out all the products I was given in my kit to show them off. My parties tend to last 2-3 hours. I'm usually done with my presentation in 20 minutes, but the guests are having so much fun that they don't leave! I always try to play a game or two, and always have something small to giveaway to the winners. And I always give a great host gift, because I appreciate the host inviting me into her home and bringing all these new customers to my business. On average, I do about 2 parties in a month. I love that I can make my own schedule! You can be picky about when you want to work, and be your own boss!
Do you "Have" to do home parties to be a consultant? What other ways can I sell the product?
There are also smaller testers called "mini testers", which can be used for a basket party! A basket party is just like a Scentsy catalog party, except I also provide my host with a full set of mini testers so that their customers can still smell each and every scent we have to offer. I tend to do more basket parties than anything else! People love that they don't have to have people in their home to still get the Scentsy experience, as well as the exact same host rewards. Scentsy also offers fundraisers, and I also do vendor and craft fairs sometimes.
How much in sales does a home party have to earn for the hostess to get discounts/free products? Tell us about the discounts for parties! I'm nosy, I'd love to hear what I could potentially earn from hosting a party with your company.
To earn host rewards for ANY type of Scentsy party, the party has to be a minimum of $150 USD before tax and shipping. Once reached, the host earns 10% of total sales in free product and 1 half priced item. Once sales reach $250 USD the host earns an extra half priced item. Once sales reach $400 USD, the host will earn 15% of total sales in free product and 3 half priced items! And if the sales reach $1,000 USD or more, there is an extra half priced item added (making the total you can earn 4). And for every guest at your Scentsy party who chooses to book their own Scentsy party, you receive an additional half priced item for attending their party! I also give a host gift on top of all that, which I give at the close of the party.
And the big question, If I were a Rep. for your company what can I expect to earn in commission? What is the "rate"?
When you first join Scentsy, the starting commission is 20%. As soon as you sell your first $1,000 USD in Scentsy products lifetime, your commission goes up to 25% and remains there. There are ways to earn more, though. If you sell $2,000 USD in one month, you will receive a bonus 5% (making your total commission 30% that month only). You can also receive bonuses from your down line, but in order to receive those you must make a monthly goal of $500 in sales per month. I didn't like that at first, however I quickly changed my opinion once I realized how unfair it is to others that you don't have to work and can still make lots of money off their hard work. I like that I still have to do my share of work in order to reap any benefits from my down line.
Is it easy to advance in your company? How long have you been a consultant and how quickly did you advance?
I am a Star Consultant, which is level #4 of 8 on the Scentsy totem pole. I started out as a Essential Consultant, at the very bottom, when I joined in September of 2010. I promoted to Certified Consultant in October 2010, Lead Consultant in November 2010, and Star Consultant in February 2011. The next 4 steps are a little more difficult, but not impossible at all. It requires a bit of work on my part to recruit and train down line consultants to be great Scentsy consultants. And while I could have already achieved the new status of Superstar Consultant by now, I felt it more important to train and guide my new recruits than to push them to do things they weren't ready to do. However, I do believe in them. They are a wonderful group of people, and they know their stuff. I will be advancing within the next month or two, I have no doubt about that.
Is there a minimum is sales that you have to make to remain "active" or to keep your status in your company? How do you attain that? Is it easy?
Scentsy just lowered their minimum sales! As of September 1st, you only have to place one order within 6 months to remain active. So literally placing one order of no minimum value, so it could even be as small as a $1.00 USD light bulb. It doesn't get easier than that!
What support do you provide to those that sign up under you? If I signed up I'd be so lost! Tell me how you would help me to get started and to be successful if I've never been in the Direct Sales Business before?
Before any of my recruits sign up, I promise them that I will be available to help and guide them 24/7. I mean each and every word of that. I have had recruits call me at 2am, because of a time difference, because they cannot figure out something with an order that has to be placed right then. I may be groggy, but I don't ever turn down a call unless it's a serious situation on my side. I've sat on the phone with a recruit for 3-4 hours, going over basics and walking them through a process step by step. They have my Facebook, emails, home phone, cell phone, address, every single possible way of contacting me. I give them a plethora of information before and after signing up, and make sure they have access to their workstations where they can take training courses. I've sent downline product when they needed it. I send out weekly emails, making sure all my girls are up to date on everything going on in the Scentsy world. I even had my own Summer Incentive Promotion this past summer, where they earned points towards a brand new $500 Coach purse!
Does your company have any kind of training for new consultants? What about "Special Events"?
Scentsy has two special events every year for training. Scentsy's annual convention, which next year's will be in Las Vegas, is the fall reveal and training sessions. I had the immense pleasure of attending this year's convention in Ft Worth, TX. And let me tell you, it was worth every penny and more. Not only do we receive tons of useful and fun training, we get to see the new products first and we get lots of free products. At convention, we got two boxes full of products that totaled more than the price of the convention ticket! There's also a Spring reveal and training, which is called Spring Sprint. This is a period of a few weeks, where a few Scentsy tour buses full of crew and product travel from place to place bringing training to YOU! The traning is always great and, once again, the free product given at this event is more than the cost of the registration. As far as new consultants go, there is an entire section of the Scentsy workstation dedicated to training new consultants. There are documents and videos that take you through every single thing, step by step. There are also DVD's that a sponsor can give to a new recruit, giving them a little insight to what we do and how we do it.
Are there any other special "Perks" that your company provides? Such as free products, extra cash, trips, etc. for anything?
You don't know the half of it! In addition to all the free product you can get at the events, there is always some sort of an incentive program going on at Scentsy! Currently, consultants are earning points towards an all-expense paid trip (you can even earn a second trip for a spouse or friend!) to the Hard Rock Resort at Punta Cana, Dominican Republic! Since the qualification period began in July for this trip, any new consultants that sign up now will receive a catch-up bonus of 5,000 points. How awesome is that? There is also a new consultant challenge. If a consultant sells a certain amount of Scentsy within their first 70 days of becoming a consultant, they can earn product credit of up to $200! Also as I mentioned before, if a consultant sells $2,000 USD or more in a month, they will get a 5% bonus of their own commission.
What is one product that seems to be a big seller?
The Scentsy wax, whether in bar or brick form, is our best seller. Customers love that we have 80+ different scents. There's something for every nose! We also introduce a new warmer and scent each month called the Warmer and Scent of the month, respectively. Those are offered at a 10% discount during their debut month, which customers always love.
What is your favorite product from your company?
Personally, I absolutely love my Cupcake Premium Mid-Size Warmer! It's our only 3pc warmer, and it's incredibly cute. Perfectly paired with our scent "Happy Birthday", it makes for a wonderful birthday gift.
Have you ever been a consultant for any other company prior to joining your company?
No! I almost joined a few, but chickened out right before signing up because I just didn't think I could do it. With Scentsy, I signed up within a month of being introduced to the product. I didn't have to be recruited, I wanted to sign up! I had no doubt in my mind that this product basically sold itself, which it definitely does.
